C10 - Organic reactions Flashcards
What is a functional group?
An atom or group of atoms that give organic compounds their characteristic reactions.
What is a homologous series?
A group of related organic compounds that have the same functional group.
What is an alcohol?
An homologous series of organic molecules which contains the -OH functional group.
What is a carboxylic acid?
An homologous series of organic molecules which contains the -COOH functional group.
What are esters?
An homologous series of organic molecules which contains the R - CO-R functional group, where R is an alkyl group.
What is fermentation?
The reaction in which the enzymes in yeast turn glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
What is combustion?
A reaction in which a compound reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water (except hydrogen which only forms water).
What is oxidation?
A reaction in which oxygen is added to a substance or electrons are lost.
What is a weak acid?
Acids that do not ionise completely in aqueous solutions, usually an organic acid.
What is a strong acid?
Acids that ionise completely in aqueous solutions, usually a mineral acid.
