C11 - Polymers Flashcards
Polymers
A substance made from very large molecules made up of many repeating units
Monomers
Small reactive molecules that react together in repeating sequences to form a very large molecule (a polymer)
Addition polymerisation
The reaction in which in which unsaturated monomers (containing C=C bonds) join together to make a polymer as the only product.
Condensation polymerisation
The reaction in which two monomers with two different functional groups join together to form a polymer plus a small molecule (such as H2O or HCl) as the other product
Proteins
Polymers made from different amino acid monomers
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid)
A large organic molecule that encodes genetic instructions for the development and functioning of living organisms and viruses
Nucleotides
The monomers which make up DNA. The nucleotides are based on the sugar deoxyribose, bonded to a phosphate group and a base. There are four possible bases that bond to the sugar
Polysaccharides
Polymers in which simple carbohydrates (monosaccharides) polymerise to make polymers such as starch and cellulose
