c8//2 Flashcards
what is equilibrium
for a reversible reaction in a closed system, equilibrium is reached when the rate of the forwards reaction equals the rate of the backwards reaction.
what happens in equilibrium
both reactions continue to happen, but the amount of reactants and products remain the same
what is le chateliers principle
whenever you change the conditions in a system in equilibrium, the position of equilibrium shifts so it cancels out the change.
what happens to the reaction when you increase the pressure
the position of equilibrium will shift to reduce pressure.
what happens If the forward reaction produces more molecules of gas
an increase in pressure decreases the amount of product formed
a decrease in pressure will increase the amount of product formed
what happens if the forwards reaction produces fewer molecules of gas
an increase in pressure increases the amount of product formed
a decrease in pressure decreases the amount of product formed
what does increasing the temperature favour
favours the endothermic reaction
