C3.2.Atoms in Ions Flashcards
Ionic Bonding is when…
Electrons are TRANSFERRED
Covalent Bonding is when…
Elctrons are SHARED
Does a Substance mixed with a Substance cause a change?
NO,you can mix TWO substances toghether without either of them changing.
e.g.sand and copper sulphate can mix and nothing would happen to either of them
When Atoms of two or more Elements mix what happens?
They form a Compound.
A Compound contains….
Two or more Elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED
When Atoms react…
They take part in charges WITH Electrons.
Ionic Bonding atoms….
lose or gain Elctrons to form charged particles called….
Ions
Noble Gases Group 0 contain the Elements…
Helium(He) Neon(Ne) Argon(Ar) Krypton(Kr) Xenon(Xe)
How does any element go into a Noble Gas through Ionic Bonding?
If Sodium (2,8,1) from Group 1 loses 1 Electron(-) it becomes (2,8) which = Neon(2,8) in Group 0 (Noble Gases)
If there in 1 more Proton (+) than Electrons (-) what is the case…
Well then the Sodium becomes positively charged!
Because the Proton (+) overtakes the Electron (-) .
Sodium Ion =
Sodium Ion = Na(+)
What properties does an ionic compound have?
A high melting point and it conducts electricity when liquid.
Gaining Electrons to form negative Ions…
Non metals react with metals, the Non metals gain electrons to become a Noble Gas
Non metals react with metals, the Non metals gain electrons to become a Noble Gas,but how?
Well, for example Chlorine (2,8,7) in Group 7,by adding one Electron it becomes (2,8,8) equal to Argon in Group 0.
Well, for example Chlorine (2,8,7) in Group 7,by adding one Electron it becomes (2,8,8) equal to Argon in Group 0.So….
There is therefore one more Electron(-) than positive protons.
So Chloride becomes negatively charged as electron (-1) has overtook a positive proton.
The Chloride Ion now carries 1 negativ charge.
