C11:The Earths Atmosphere Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how sedimentary rocks are formed…
A
- When plants, plankton and marine animals die, they fall to the seaned and get buried by layers of sediment.
- Over millions of years they become compressed and from sedimentary rocks.
2
Q
Describe the greenhouse affect and how it affects global temperature…
A
- Long wavelength radiation that is reflected back of the earth is absorebed by greenhouse gases, this re rediates in all directions resulting in warming of the surface of the Earth.
- Global temperature is affected and is a lot more than it should be,this is due to human activity which allows more harmful Co2 in the atmosphere.
- Global temperature can ; melt ice which results in flooding, changes in rainfall pattern, unpredictable and severe storms and amount of water (if it dries up)
3
Q
State two things governments can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of a business…
A
- Tax companies or individuals based on the amount of greenhouse gases they emit,e.g taxing cars based on carbon dioxide they emit:this would encourage people to buy cars better for the environment
- Put a stop on emission of all greenhouse gases companies make, and ensure a license is required for emissions.
4
Q
Why can making reductions to carbon footprint be difficult?
A
- More work needed to be done for tech that lowers emissions
- May cost lots of money
- Government may not want to stunt economic growth
- Hard to get people to change to a more eco friendly lifestyle.
5
Q
Name three potential pollutants that could be released as a result of icomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, that wouldnt be released as a result of complete combustion…
A
- unburnt fuel
- carbon monoxide
- soot(carbon)
6
Q
What problems do particulates cause?
A
- If inhaled they can get stuck in the lungs and cause damage, leading to respiratory problems
- Bad for environment, reflect sunlight back into space causing global dimming
7
Q
What problems do carbon monoxide cause?
A
-It can stop blood from carrying oxygen around the body,it binds the haemoglobin that carries oxygen.
This leads to fainting, coma or even death.
