C3.10 Giant metallic structures Flashcards
1
Q
Why can metals be bent and shaped without breaking?
A
Because the layers of atoms,or positively charged ions,in a giant metallic structure can slid over eachother.
2
Q
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
A
Because the regular layers in a pure metal are distorted by atoms of different sizes in an alloy.
Alloys have carbon atoms that are a different size and makes it more difficult for the layers to slide over eachother.
3
Q
Who do metals conduct electricity and thermal energy?
A
Becuase of the delocalised electrons in metals that enable electricity and thermal energy to be transferred through a metal easily.
