Q

intro

A
  • it proposed to be a new garden settlement on land between Tonbridge and Paddock Wood in Kent.
  • range of new features which will allow the community of Tudeley to live sustainably
  • new housing, mixed-use opportunities, open green spaces, social facilities and a huge range of different transport methods
  • However, despite the proposal focusing largely on sustainability, there are contrasting views on whether it meets the requirements to be considered a sustainable settlement.

Q

first argument - floods

A
  • main feature of sustainable settlement - environmental protection
  • perspectives say that impermeable surfaces floods
  • floods = habitats lost, current builds effected and lots of money
  • but the proposal says no building on flood plains anicent woodlands and existing habitats will be protected

second arugment - energy

A
  • ustainbale settlement must have renewable enegy opportunities
  • proposal says solar farm and renewable wnergy used throughout the devlopemtn
  • but solar fserm may not proudce energy for the whole village and too £££ to maintain

third argument - transport

A
  • has to have sustainbale transport systems
  • propsal states - cycle route and footpaths are strong examples of sustainable transport systems because no carbon emissions are released and can be done by the majority of the community
  • However, others may argue that because the roads are already congested, cycling to nearby towns to get to work or friends etc, will be very dangerous. In bad weather conditions these methods may also be inconvenient and put people at risk. Additionally, they would also not be possible for people will physical disabilities and people who work outside of approximately a thirty-minute walk
  • It also states that the railway station will not be built until 1900 houses have been completed. Therefore, there will be a large gradual increase in traffic congestion up to this point which will also contribute to global warming further.
  • plan for Tudeley Village states that there is a proposed bypass around Five Oak Green which will help to manage the increase in traffic. However, this will reduce congestion but not make the methods of transport any more sustainable.

Q

conclusion

A

Overall in my opinion, I can see why some people may say that the Tudeley village development should not be considered an example of sustainable urban development and I somewhat agree due to the flood risks, potential renewable energy shortages and sustainable transport issues. However, I believe that overall, the Tudeley Village urban development plan should be considered a sustainable urban development. This is because the majority of the proposal does meet the general requirements to be considered a sustainable settlement and even states how the construction of it will use environmentally friendly energy methods.
