elective surgery is chosen by the pateint and is planned in advance and the surgery is not absolutely necessary, Urgent surgery must be performed for health reasons but is not always an emergency and can be planned and scheduled in advance, Emergency surgery is unexpected and unscheduled that is performed immediately to save a patients life or a llimb
which type of anesthesia is inhaled or injected directly into a vein and affects the brain and entire body

list eight guidelines for assisting with post operative care
remove the water pitcher, glass and any other food/fluids from immediate area, assist with urinating before surgery, assist with enemas, bathing, makes sure call light is near, help the resident change, transfer to stretcher/gurney if necessary, make sure id badge is accurate and on wrist or ankle prior to transport
list eight guidelines for assisting with pre operative care
move furniture, assit with transfers, return dentures/hearing aids to resident, measure and record vital sighs, reposition every one to two hours and elevate extremities, assist with deep breathing/coughing, assist with antiembolic stockings, apply binders, assist with elimination, assist with ambulation
list 10 signs and symptoms to report about a resident after surgery
changes in vital signs; difficulty breathing: mental changes, such as confusion or disorientation: changes in consciousness; pale or cyanotic skin; skin that is cold or clammy; increase in amount of drainage; swelling at IV site; IV that is not dripping: nausea or vomiting: numbness or tingling and complaints of pain
what does a pule oximeter measure
the amount of oxygen in the blood (also called oxygen saturation) and the pulse rate
what is important to report about the skin when a resident is using a telemetry unit
observe and report any signs of skin breakdown from the pads, such as irritation, rash, cracks, breaks, sores, or bleeding on the skin under or around the pads
what are alternative methods of communication that nursing assistants can use with residents who have artificial airways?
writing notes, drawing pictures, using communication boards, and using hand and eye signals
what are a nursing assistants responsibilities with tracheostomy care
carful observing and reporting, shotness of breath, trouble breathing, gurgling sounds, skin breakdown, irritation, rash, cracks, breaks, sores, bleeding on the skin, discharge that the resident coughs up, thick yellow, green, bloody or order discharge, mouth sores or discomfort and disconnected tubing.

enter the room often so that the resident can see you and reassures residents that they are being carefully observed. Clipboards, notepads, and communication boards will help with communication
