C13 Flashcards
limestone
Calcium Carbonate
slacked lime
Calcium Hydroxide
quicklime/lime
Calcium Oxide
How is Calcium carbonate turned into Calcium Oxide
- Material heated to above 825’C
-Process called calcination or lime-burning, separates CO2 from CaCO3
-Quicklime/lime is produced
-Is unstable so reacts with Co2 in air and reaction is reversed
Is lime burning endo or exothermic?
Endothermic
What is done to prevent the reverse reaction
Remove Carbon dioxide as it is produced
What does Calcium Carbonate do to soil?
Increases pH, without making the soil alkaline
How does Limestone help neutralise industrial waste products?
-It is used in stacked gas scrubber to reduce sulfur dioxide emission with the SO2 reacting with the CaCO3 to form solid Calcium Sulfite
-Flue-gas desulfurization involves spraying acidic sulfur dioxide with jets of CaC03 to reduce pollution by neutralising these gases before they are release.
