B7 Flashcards
Circulatory system
System of blood vessels with a pump and valves to ensure one way flow of blood
Red blood cell functions
transport oxygen around the body from the lungs to cells which require it for aerobic respiration
-They carry oxygen in the form of oxyhaemoglobin
White blood cell functions
defend the body against infection by pathogens by carrying out phagocytosis and antibody production
Plasma functions
transport of carbon dioxide, blood cells, soluble nutrients, urea, mineral ions, and hormones
Platelets function
clotting
Transpiration
loss of water vapour from plant leaves by evaporation of water at
the surfaces of the mesophyll cells followed by diffusion of water vapour through the stomata
Xylem
carries water and dissolved salts/ions from the roots to the rest of the plant
Phloem
transport food materials (mainly sucrose and amino acids) made by the plant from photosynthesising leaves to non-photosynthesising regions in the roots and stem
Active transport
Movement of particles from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration against the concentration gradient due to external energy
Translocation
movement of sucrose and amino acids in phloem from regions of production to regions of storage, regions where they are used for respiration or growth (sink)
