C1 Flashcards
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that has the properties of the element
Ion
An atom that has gained or lost electrons to get a full outer shell. This makes them more stable, because the number of protons is no longer the same as the number, the ions are charged
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms chemically combined to form an identifiable unit which retains the properties and composition of the substance
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to a low concentration down a concentration gradient as a result of their random movement.
Describe solids in terms of particle separation, arrangement, and type of motion
Closely packed together, impossible to compress - Ordered, regular arrangement - Fixed in place and can vibrate.
Describe liquids in terms of particle separation, arrangement, and type of motion
Touching, near impossible to compress - No regular arrangement - Can move past one another.
Describe gases in terms of particle separation, arrangement, and type of motion
Widely spaced apart. Randomly arranged. Particles move freely.
How does a larger molecular mass effect the rate of diffusion?
-Travel slower
-Do not travel as far in the same amount of time
How does a smaller molecular mass effect the rate of diffusion?
-Travel faster
-Travel further in the same amount of time
What is the basis of the kinetic theory?
When substances are heated, the particles absorb thermal energy which is converted into kinetic energy.
