A
inner drive to participate and be successful, desire to take part for fun, enjoyment, pride and satisfaction

A
external drive to participate and be successful, reasons: rewards, medals, status, praise and recognition

Advantages of intrinsic motivation
A
- more self sufficient
- May encourage lifelong participation
- Intrinsic rewards may be more valuable

Disadvantages of intrinsic motivation
A
- May not be enough to maintain motivation
- Cognitive learner may find it difficult and not enjoyable so may require more than intrinsic motivation

Advantages of extrinsic motivation
A
- more significant impact
- rewards may improve confidence
- badges may be a very effective way to get children to learn

Disadvantages of extrinsic motivation
A
- may not lead to long term participation
- if extrinsic rewards are removed motivation may decline
