Define the term attitude
a predisposition to act in a particular way towards something or someone in a person’s environment
Factors that cause positive attitudes to be formed
- belief in the benefits of exercise
- enjoyable experiences
- being good at a particular sport
- excited by the challenge of sport
- stress release
- influence of significant others
Factors that cause negative attitudes to be formed
- not believing in the benefits
- bad past experiences (injury/failure)
- lack of ability
- fear of taking part
- stress and anxiety when taking part
- influence of others (non-participation is norm)
What is the theory for attitude and explain it
triadic model
- cognitive / affective / behavioural
cognitive: knowledge and beliefs
Affective: feelings and emotions towards it
behavioural: intended behaviour (positive if are two components are positive)
If all elements of the triangle are even then the attitude remains stable
How do you change attitudes (3)
The persuader - persuasive communication from a high status role model for example a pe teacher
The message - quality of message needs to be of high standard and not overloading the performer
The recipient - the person needs to be willing to change their attitude not be stubborn
describe cognitive dissonance
- must be opposing beliefs
- this causes discomfort (dissonance)
- to be comfortable one of the beliefs must be dominant
- person doing it needs to be a well respected high status role model (for example a teacher)
