-does focus on internal and external processes but it fails to consider important parts of nature and nurture

What is scientific approach?(1)
A
-objective and controlled scientific research ef memory research held in lab under strict conditions and brain scanning such as PET scanners are able to locate exact responsibilites of different areas of brain in relation to the cognitive process

What is mechanistic approach?(2)
A
- potrays human behaviour as being like a machine, cognitive approach focuses on behaviour of computers, so outcome is mechanisitic
- raises issue of whether a computer could ever perform like a human brain eg ignores social and emotional factors

-focuses on mental processes only and not emotional or social eg multi store model of memory

- has been useful through CBT, in treating depression and has also helped field of development
- Piaget 1970 developed theory about how childrens thinking develops differently to adults

- focuses on important processes that occur between and stimulus and response. Compared with behaviourists who didnt focus on feelings
- focus on how mediational processes affect how we respond to the world around us and has helped to explain practical elements of human behaviour
