C1-Biological Approach-Therapy Flashcards
What is a strength and a weakness in terms of social implications in drug therapy?(S+W)
+society is more accepting
-overmedicated society
What are the weaknesses in terms of ethics in drug therapy?(3)
- disempowering
- distress
- lack of valid consent
What are anti-psychotic drugs as a component of drug therapy?(4)
- used to treat schizophrenia
- combat positive symptoms
- blocks the action of dopamine. Binds to dopamine receptors and blocks the uptake of it
- types of anti psychotic drugs: conventional (bind for longer) and atypical (shorter binding time and most used)
What are beta blockers as a component of drug therapy?(5)
- reduce activity of sympathetic nervous system and associated with undesirable symptoms
- DONT impact the brain
- reduce activity in pathway of SNS around the body
- levels of stress can lead to adrenaline and noradrenaline being pumped around the body which stimulate beta adrengic receptors in various parts of the body including heart, BB are blocking receptors from recieving adrenaline
- BB bind to beta adrengic receptors and blocks the receptor from being stimulated so slows heart rate
What are anti anxiety drugs as a component of drug therapy?(4)
- an example of anxiety medication would be benzodiazphene which reduces CNS activity
- enhances GABA (gamma amino bytric acid)
- GABA slows down nerve cell activity and growing 40% of brain cells respond to GABA
- overall effect is brain output of excitory neurotransmitters
What are anti depressant drugs as a component of drug therapy?(4)
- one types are SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
- reduce the rate that neurotransmitters are re absorbed by nerve endings- keep as much serotonin in synaptic cleft as possible
- block enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters
- examples: prozac and setraline
In drug therapy, how can biological assumptions be applied to?(2)
- psychological disorders have physical cause
- mental illnesses are like physical illnesses and can be treated similarily
In drug therapy, how can localisation of brain function can be applied?(2)
- psychological disorders will be localised to specific areas of the brain which can lead to behaviours
- drugs can target areas of the brain and change behaviour
What are the strengths in terms of ethics in drug therapy?(2)
+enhances quality of life
+removes stigma of psychological conditions
In drug therapy, how can the role of neurotransmitters be applied?(2)
- changes in the neurotransmitters and activity influence our behaviour and feelings
- drugs can be used to alter behavioir
What are the weaknesses in terms of effectiveness in drug therapy?(3)
- short term effect
- dont work effectively for everyone
- dependency issues may lead to withdrawal syndrome
What are the strengths in terms of effectiveness in drug therapy?(3)
+cheap for patient, easy adminstration and little motivation required
+effective (double blind trial)
+gives patient time to heal emotionall
What are the three components of drug therapy?(3)
- anti anxiety drugs and beta blockers
- anti depressants
- anti psychotic drugs
