Schism of 1054
The church split: Orthodox in the East and Roman Catholic in West
Orthodox Church
Church in the East, had roots in greek philosophy and disagreed with clergy freedoms of Roman Catholics
Ottoman Turks
Enemies/ invaders who conquered territory on borders and eventually defeated Byzantine army, causing its fall in the west
Emperor Justinian
He and his wife ruled and attempted to reform the empire’s administration. This was disliked and led to revolts.

Important building- large church built after revolts
Nika Revolt
Rebellion to end Justinian’s reign that left Constantinople in ruins. Military later killed revolters by the thousands

Justinian’s wife and advisor- powerful woman
