Group of city states on coast- they were the center of trade, and therefore very rich, and were a blend of cultures (Bantu+ Arab= Swahili)

3 different empires (not kingdoms) that were indigenous culture mixed with islamic influences. They were prosperous from the Gold- salt trade.

Gold from west Africa was traded for salt with North Africa and Islam

Mali Emperor who was very rich and expanded Mali. He also went on a hajj
Timbuktu
City of education and intelligence- many doctors, judges, priests, and books.
How did geography lead to a diversity of African Civilization?
5 different climate zones on a massive continent led to different cultures and the ability to trade with Europe/Asia allowed for prosperous societies
How did the spread of Islam influence African civilization?
Created Swahili culture ( Bantu + Arab = Swahili)
Do african civilizations deserve to be called great civilizations?
Yes: they had many prosperous, complex cultures with effective trade and flourishing cultures. Any other contradictory belief stems from European colonization and stereotypes
