Philosophy that believes people are naturally bad and that behavior must be harshly punished and prevented rather then promoted. Believed in strong and controlling government
Confucianism
Philosophy that believed that all people are naturally good and stressed education, family relationships (and filial piety), and government.
Warring States Period
Power was held by many individual states and this lead to chaos- this was when many philosophies developed and this time ended when the Qin came to power
Qin Dynasty
Unified china for first time- legalist/strict rule
Han dynasty
Unity and peace, Confucianist rule, and achievements in art and tech
Zhou Dynasty
Introduced mandate of heaven, established feudal system, and economic growth
Filial Piety
Confucius belief of respect and loyalty to parents
Daoism
Philosophy- go with the flow and live in harmony with the world. Founded by Lao Tzu
Civil Service exam
Confucian belief- to text government officials on Confucius teachings,moral beliefs and general education
Mandate of Heaven
Belief that Gods allowed rulers to rule if they were good, and when they were bad God would naturally find a way to kick them out. This made people that all rulers therefore had to be good
Dynastic Cycle
Dynasty in power -> internal and external problems -> signs of loss of Mandate of Heaven -> opportunity for revolt -> new group emerges -> dynasty in power

Goods traded from china to Europe/Middle east, very long trade route
Role of Women in China
Secondary role to men- made for marrying

By standardizing currencies/language and getting rid of feudalism
