Buspirone Flashcards
What is Buspirone?
5HT partial receptor agonist
What is Buspirone used to treat?
treat generalized anxiety
benefits of Buspirone?
does not cause sedation (drowsiness) tolerance or physical dependence. In addition it does not cause anticonvulsant or muscle relaxant effects.
mechanism of Buspirone action
that it has high affinity for 5-HT1A receptors. These are present on presynaptic neurons in the dorsal raphe and on postsynaptic neurons in the hippocampus.
effect of Buspirone?
to inhibit the firing rate of 5-HT-containing neurons in the dorsal raphe
which receptor does Buspirone also bind to?
binds D2 receptors
what is the effect of Buspirone binding to D2 receptors?
blocking presynaptic dopamine receptors.
what is the net result of buspirone actions
serotonergic activity is suppressed while noradrenergic and dopaminergic cell firing is enhanced.
