Burns Flashcards
Which phase of wound healing do damaged blood vessels begin to regrow?
Migratory phase
Key cells involved in migratory phase of wound healing
keratinocytes migrating beneath scab to bridge gap btwn dermal edges
Purpose of inflammation in wound healing
recruit immune cells to remove cellular debris
Which phase of wound healing due you get deposition of collagen in random patterns?
Proliferative phase
Why do you get hyperpigmentation after a superficial burn
melanocyte overactivity due to burn trauma
Why do you get hypopigmentation after deep burns?
melanocytes damaged
If dermal edges are close together:
cutaneous wound healing - skin repairs itself
Secondary intention occurs when
sides of wound not opposed so healing occurs from bottom upwards
Granulation tissue functions
Immune: Protects the wound surface from microbial invasion and further injury.
Proliferative: Fills the wound from its base with new tissue and vasculature.
Temporary plug: Replaces necrotic tissue until replacement by scar tissue
Why is it important for granulation tissue to fill the basis of deep wound?
allows epithelium to proliferate + regenerate to completely cover the wound
Key cells required in secondary intention
Myofibroblasts
=> modified SMC containing actin + myosin –> contract to pull dermal edges of wound closer together
When is your core body temperature lowest?
just before you wake up
