Superficial burn
A
Outer epidermis. Area slightly red with edema
Heals in 2-5 days

Superficial partial thickness
A
Epidermis and upper portion of dermis. May be extremely painful with blisters
Healing in 5-21 days

Deep partial thickness
A
Complete destruction of epidermis and most of dermis
Area discolored with broken blisters, hypertrophic or keloid scarring
Moderate levels of pain
21-35 days

Full thickness
A
Complete destruction of epidermis and dermis and partial damage to subcutaneous layer
Eschar formation
Minimal pain

Subdermal
A
Complete destruction of epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. May involve muscle or bone
Requires surgical intervention
