Permanent dilatation of airways proximal to terminal bronchioles secondary to chronic infection/inflammation

What are the causes of bronchiectasis?
A
Post infective- TB, pneumonia CF Bronchial obstruction- cancer, foreign body Immune Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis

What is the presentation of bronchiectasis?
A
Recurrent infection- usually h. influenzae Chronic cough, productive HAemoptysis SOB Chest pain Creps and crackles

A
Main= h. influenzae
Pseudomonas aeroginosa
Klebsiella
Strep pneumonia

Who is the typical bronchiectasis patient?
A
Not usually smoker

CXR
CT
Sputum culture

What is the management of bronchiectasis?
A
Treat any causes Nutrition Physical- exercise and airway clearance Antibiotics for exacerbations Bronchodilators

A
