ARDS Flashcards
What is ARDS?
Acute condition of bilateral pulmonary infiltrates and severe hyperaemia in the absence of a cardiogenic cause
Increased permeability of alveolar capillaries, leading to fluid accumulation in alveoli
What can cause ARDS?
Infection Trauma Smoke inhalation Acute pancreatitis Cardio-pulmonary bypass Massive blood transfusion
What is the presentation of ARDS?
Acute onset and severe
Dyspnoea, tachypnoea
Bilateral crackles
Low O2 sats
What investigations are done for ARDS?
CXR
ABG
Pulmonary artery wedge pressure if needed
What are the diagnostic criteria for ARDS?
Acute onset
Pulmonary oedema
Pa02/Fi02 <200mmHg= aka low sats despite oxygen
What is the management of ARDS?
ITU with oxygenation/ventilation
Manage cause and general supportive care
Prone position can help
What is the prognosis for ARDS?
~30-50% mortality
