Brief MRI Therapy (Strategic Therapy) Flashcards
- Jay Hayley
- Watzlawick,
- Bateson (cybernetics)
- Jackson
- circular questioning to develop awareness
- 10 Sessions max
- reframing and paradoxical interventions
- principles of cybernetics (feedback loops)
- 1st and 2nd order change
- solution is the problem
- circular causality - problem is repetitive pattern
- adopt more flexible roles
- not problem focused - PROCESS focused
- more about process not about content
- metacommunication
- at the system level - changes rules
- reframing behaviors
- interrupt family games, invariant prescriptions
- set number of session in beginning of treatment
- work with individual motivated to have problem go away
- attends to belief rather than behavior
- ritual - ordering of behavior in the family either on certain days or at certain times
Report – the content aspect of communication. Command is often nonverbal and makes a statement about the relationship between communicators. Problems arise when report and command are contradictory. … In complementary relationships, one person is superior while the other person is inferior or submissive.
therapists not encouraged to go through own therapy
individuals are reactors to information via social reaction (foundation of MRI )
homeostasis: Families regulate themselves using symptoms as negative feedback. According to Jackson, this helped families keep their equilibrium.
problem is the attempted solution
Therapeutic double bind - no matter what you do it’s wrong
(undo double bind - attribute new meaning to same behavior)
Dangers of improvement - ask clients to identify potential problems that might arise if the problem were resolved
