Q

describe the mechanisms of breathing during inspiration

A

1)the diaphragm contracts and flattens
2)the external intercostals muscles contract and raises, moving up and outwards of the rib cage
3) increase the volume of the thoracic cavity
4) decreases the pressure in the lungs so air is drown into the lungs
5) during exercise the sternocleidomastoid at the neck contracts the further raise the rib cage therefore the thoracic cavity increases further and the pressure gradient decreases further

Q

describe the mechanisms of expiration during exercise

A

1) the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards returning to its done shape
2) intercostal muscles contract and lowers the rib cage
3) the volume of the thoracic cavity decreases
4) therefore the pressure in the pressure in the lungs increases
5) during exercise the transverse and rectus abdominals and obliques also contract to further the decrease the volume of the thoracic cavity
6) further increasing the pressure of the lungs so more air is forced out the lungs
