Breathing Interventions Flashcards
1
Q
Describe incentive spirometry
A
- used to increase lung capacity
- patient should form a tight seal around the mouth piece
- patient should breathe in deeply & slowly & watch flow meter for feedback
- patient should hold the inspiration at its end point for 4-5 secs then release mouth piece & exhale
- guideline is 10 deep breaths each awake hour
2
Q
Describe pursed lip breathing
A
- used to reduce shortness of breath for patients with COPD
- inhale normally through the nose for 2 sec
- purse the lips then exhale slowly through the mouth for 4 sec
- repeat 4-5 times
3
Q
Purposes of diaphragmatic breathing
A
- relaxation/physiological quieting
- postural/core musculoskeletal awareness
- mobilize thorax/abdomen
- improve respiratory capacity/breath control
- decrease blood pressure
- teach effective coughing/mobilize secretions
4
Q
Describe diaphragmatic breathing
A
- have patient place one hand on the upper chest & the other on the abdomen
- inhale slowly & deeply
- focus on breathing in the abdomen; hand on abdomen should rise up while hand on chest should have little to no movement
- exhale slowly & repeat
5
Q
Describe active cycle of breathing
A
- used to clear/mobilize pulmonary secretions & to generally improve lung function
- 3 phases: breathing control, deep breathing exercises, & huffing/forced expiratory technique
- repeat the entire cycle for 10 min or until lungs feel more clear
6
Q
Describe the breathing control phase
A
- patient should breathe in & out gently through the nose
- gradually try to make breaths slower
- continue for 6 breaths or until they feel ready to move on
7
Q
Describe the deep breathing exercises phase
A
- take a long, slow, deep breath in
- hold the air for 2-3 sec
- breath out gently
- repeat 3-5 times
8
Q
Describe the huffing/forced expiratory technique phase
A
- take a medium breath in
- breath out with mouth open & mild to moderate force until lungs feel empty
- repeat 1-2 times
- cough has needed to clear secretions
