Fibroadenoma
hard, very mobile, teens to 30s
Fibrocystic breast disease
multiple lumps, get bigger with menses, late teens-40s
Ductal rectasia
hard lumps with discharge, occurs near menopause
Intraductal papilloma
bloody nipple discharge with usually no lump, occurs around 40-55
Treatment for fibrocystic
BSE, always wait to see if they go away, cant turn to cancer, may need aspiration
The decrease in firmness in the breasts with age is called what?
Pendulous
What is the most important prognosis factor for breast cancer?
Involvement of lumps in the axillary
HER-2 gene expression.
If high, means tumor is going to grow fast and typically resistant
Receptor-positive tumors
If positive, its a good sign. Can most likely treat with hormone therapy
Lumpectomy
Surgical removal of tumor while conserving most breast tissue. Tumor has to be localized, may give radiation after to killl leftover tumors
first day post-op from breast surgery should include what?
Ball exercises, flex and extend elbow
Herceptin
Type of biologic/targeted therapy. Can be used if tumor has high HER-2.
Three ways to do biopsy to look for breast cancer
Open surgical, fine needle aspiration, and stereostatic/ultrasound core biopsy.
How often should you get a mammogram?
q 2 years after the age of 50. Earlier if at higher risk
What do you try before biopsy?
mammogram, then ultrasound, then finally confirm with biopsy.
