What age range is fibroadenomas common in?
< 30 years
How do fibroadenomas present?
as ‘breast mice’ due as they are discrete, non-tender, highly mobile lumps
What age range are fibroadenosis common in?
Most common in middle-aged women
What is the most common presentation of fibroadenosis and what may worsen symptoms?
‘Lumpy’ breasts which may be painful.
Symptoms may worsen prior to menstruation
How is breast cancer characterised?
a hard, irregular lump. There may be associated nipple inversion or skin tethering
What is pagets disease of the breast?
intraductal carcinoma associated with a reddening and thickening (may resemble eczematous changes) of the nipple/areola
What is mammary duct ectasia?
dilatation of large breast ducts
When are mammary duct ectasia common?
menopause
How does mammary duct ectasia present?
May present with a tender lump around the areola +/- a green nipple discharge
What happens if mammary duct ectasia ruptures?
cause local inflammation, sometimes referred to as ‘plasma cell mastitis’
What is duct papilloma?
Local areas of epithelial proliferation in large mammary ducts
Hyperplastic lesions rather than malignant or premalignant
how does duct papilloma present?
blood stained discharge
in whom is fat necrosis common in?
obese women with large boobs
what is a common cause of fat necrosis?
trauma
how does fat necrosis present?
the lesion is typical firm and round but may develop into a hard, irregular breast lump
