Benign Breast lesions Flashcards
Where does a fibroadenoma develop from?
Develop from a whole lobule
What does a fibroadenoma feel like?
Mobile, firm breast lumps
Is there an increased risk of malignancy with a fibroadenoma?
No
What is the management of a fibroadenoma?
If >3cm surgical excision is usual
Phyllodes tumours should be widely excised (mastectomy if the lesion is large)
How does a breast cyst present?
smooth discrete lump (may be fluctuant)
What is the risk of breast cancer
small increased risk
is the management of a breast cyst?
Cysts should be aspirated,
those which are blood stained or persistently refill should be biopsied or excised
What does a sclerosis adenosis usually present with?
presents as a breast lump or breast pain
What can be seen on a mammogram in regards to sclerosing adenosis?
may mimic carcinoma
What does scelorsing adenosis cause?
Cause distortion of the distal lobular unit, without hyperplasia (complex lesions will show hyperplasia)
What is the malignancy risk in regards to sclerosing adenosis?
none
what is the management of scelorosing adenosis?
lesions should be biopsied, excision is not mandatory
what is the presentation of epithelial hyperplasia?
generalised lumpiness through to discrete lump
what is the risk of malignancy in regards to epithelial hyperplasia?
Atypical features and family history of breast cancer confers greatly increased risk of malignancy
What is the management of epithelial hyperplasia?
If no atypical features then conservative,
those with atypical features require either close monitoring or surgical resection
