Brake Pipe Defects Flashcards
What is the first thing you check when you lose BP pressure?
Check train has not derailed
When you lose brake pipe pressure what is a likely cause?
Trip activation at signal or debris
If Trip is activated and not in vicinity of a signal what do you do?
100% sure it is debris!
Note where you are and MC number.
Contact TC - TEC
Reset Trip and do Extreme Caution to next signal
(Summatives says whole train past next signal)
What do you do if rear trip is activating?
And how do you know you have back tripped?
Place BCH to EMERGENCY - deplete BP
Return to RUN and RELEASE
Confirm Trip activation by observing BP and MR pressure recovering
Go and locate, raise, and isolate
Travel at extreme caution to next signal
How do you reset the VICERS?
Train comes to stand
MCH to COAST
Reverser OFF
BCH to EMERGENCY - to drain BP to 0
Wait 10 seconds
Press VICERS acknowledgement button
Return BCH to Run and Release to charge BP
If you lose BP Pressure and unable to recharge BP (ie. it’s not VICERS or TRIP) what is first thing you do?
Reactive Track Access
Full Cab Unattended
Turn RED EC Cock
Operate FPV and press CG Bypass and observe BP rising
If it doesn’t you have to go and locate leak
If Trip is defective how do you isolate it?
Rear and Lead cab?
Rear:
Turn YELLOW TECHAV in rear cab
Return to lead cab and travel at Extreme Caution to next fixed signal
Lead:
Turn RED EC and operate on Secondary Safety Circuit and travel at Extreme Caution to next fixed signal
When operating a train with a BP defect where must the train be driven from?
From longest portion of continuous BP
(You need at least 50% to operate train)
When operating a train with a BP defect what is the speed restriction?
15kmh
How do you figure out whether BP rupture is in leading or trailing unit?
Go to Trailing Centre Motor and ensure Park Brake is locally applied.
Isolate BP IC on Trailing Centre Motor
Enter Leading Centre Motor and ensure Park bake is locally applied
Open BVICS …
… If BP charges the leak is in Trailing Unit
… If BP fails to charge leak is in Leading Unit
What is the procedure to operate the train with ruptured BP in Cars 1,2 or 3?
Select a Cab to operate power and brake from
Ensure BVICS closed in all other cabs
Isolate BP on either end of rupture
Release air brake by operating hand release valve on Brake Unit
Trip EP CB on motor you are driving from
CE rides in leading motor communicating instructions to driver
Proceed at no more than 15kmh
CE operates park brake if required
If there is a ruptured BP in the leading unit (cars 1, 2 or 3) can you drive the train?
Only with a CE
If no CE train is disabled
With rupture of BP in leading unit where would the CE be to move the train?
In lead cab
With rupture of BP in leading unit what brake would you be operating on?
Trip EP CB and run on Air brake
With ruptured BP what do you have to do to brake unit on isolated car?
release air brake on defective car by pulling hand release valve on brake unit.
