Brainstem and Cerebellum B6 Flashcards
What compartment analyzes cranial nerves, motor coordination and balance?
Infratentorial compartment
- Brainstem
- Cerebellum
Central canal starts at the ________.
medulla
Cerebral aqueduct is ________ (direction) the midbrain.
inside
_________ is connection of brainstem and cerebellum.
Crus Cerebri
Where are each cranial nerves located in the brain?
CN 3-4= Midbrain
CN5-7= pons
CN8-12= medulla
What nerve comes out the posterior side of the brainstem?
CN IV Trochlear
What are the long tracts?
Corticospinal and corticonuclear (corticobulbar)
Dorsal column system
Anterolateral system
Why are CN’s important for diagnosing?
Damage to CN’s can show what level of brainstem damage is at.
Where does Anterolateral track synapse?
Thalamus, starts 3rd order neurons
If you have damage to ventral, and lateral side of brainstem what is likely to happen?
Pain, temp, crude touch deficits would be seen
True/False: All three longitudinal tracts (the big 3) have only 1 midline crossing!
True, know where they cross, know where they run, know where they synapse, know what happens when they are disrupted in different locations, draw em… just fuggin know em
Where does the Lateral corticospinal tract cross and synapse?
Crosses: pyramidal decussation in medulla
Synapse: dorsal horn,
Lower motor neuron once synapses
Where does the Anterolateral tract cross and synapse?
Crosses: Cervical spinal cord through anterior white commissure
Synapse: Ventral horn and Lateral nucleus of thalamus and becomes 3rd order neuron
Where does the dorsal column tract cross and synapse?
Crosses: Caudal Medulla
Synapse: Nucleus cuneatus in medulla
becomes second order then synapses in Thalamus and becomes 3rd order neuron
