brain Flashcards
What does the anterior cranial fossa support?
frontal poles of cerebrum frontal lobes
What forms the anterior cranial fossa?
orbital plates of frontal bone , crista galli & cribriform plates of ethmoid bone and jugum of sphenoid bone
What does the anterior cranial fossa contain?
it contains the olfactory bulb, the falx cerebri, and the tentorium cerebelli
What does the middle cranial fossa contain?
Dominant contents of are temporal poles & inferior temporal surface of temporal lobes of cerebrum, hypophysis, cerebri, optic chiasma
Its contain cerebellum, the pons, medulla oblongata
What are the borders of the middle cranial fossa?
Anterior boundary formed by anterior clinoid process & lesser wing of sphenoid bone, posteriorly the posterior clinoid process & dorsum sellae of sphenoid as well as superior border of petrous part of temporal bone form the border.
Laterally it is formed by squamae of the temporal bone, frontal angles of parietal bone & greater wing of sphenoid bone.
Sella turcica is in the middle cranial fossa
What are the different foramina found in the middle cranial fossa?
Optic canal, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale and foramen lacerum.
Where is the cavernous sinus and what is its function?
Cavernous sinus is directly related to side of body of sphenoid. Internal carotid arteries pass through cavernous sinuses
What are the boundaries of the posterior cranial fossa?
Anterior boundary is formed by the dorsum sellae, posterior clinoid process of sphenoid bone, basilar part of occipital bone.
Laterally are petrous & mastoid parts of temporal bone , the lateral part of occipital bone, mastoid angle of the parietal bone.
The roof of fossa is formed by the tentorium cerebelli
Includes foramen magnum, jugular foramen, opening for condylar canal, opening for hypoglossal canal, opening for internal acoustic meatus.
What does the brainstem surround?
Cerebral aqueduct or aqueduct of sylvian, 4th ventricle and central canal.
What is the diencephalon?
Third ventricle, thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal gland. It is the posterior aspect of the forebrain.
What are the parts of the basal nuclei?
Claustrum, globus pallidus, putamen and caudate nucleus
