blood supply of the brain Flashcards
Describe the structure of the cavernous sinus
Cavernous sinus is a large collection of thin-walled veins creating a cavity bordered by temporal bone & sphenoid bone lateral to each side of pituitary fossa
What are the parts of the internal carotid artery?
Cervical, petrous, cavernous and cerebral
Carotid siphon - where is it seen?
U-shaped portion
Formed partially by cavernous part and partially by cerebral part
Ophthalmic artery is a branch of carotid siphon
What are the two arteries that branch off the external carotid artery?
maxillary and facial. The external carotid artery also has cervical branches
How would you distinguish between the internal carotid artery from the external carotid artery?
The internal carotid artery is the size of the common carotid artery and it doesn’t have any branches.
What are the four major branches of the anterior cerebral arteries?
Pericollosal, callosomarginal artery, A1 segment and the recurrent artery of heubner
What are the four branches of the anterior cerebral arteries?
anterior, middle, pericollosal cerebral artery and the posterior communicating cerebral artery. This supplies 2/3 of the brain
What artery does the A1 segment branch into?
anterior communicating artery which is the common location for cerebral aneurysms.
Pericallosal artery supplies which 2 parts of the brain?
Supplies medial surface of cerebral hemispheres and corpus callosum.
What does the middle cerebral arteries supply?
major part of temporal lobe, anterolateral frontal lobe and parietal lobe. Internal capsule, head of the caudate and the globus pallidus.
