What are the sextants?
7-4, 3-3, 4-7 upper and lower
What is a BPE and why is it good?
Screening tool for unrecognised Periodontal disease
It’s good as it is fast and cost effective
Internationally recognised and can be quickly communicated
What are limitations of taking a BPE
Patient tolerance and discomfort
Only records pocket depth
Cannot be used for monitoring
What happens if teeth are missing in a sextant?
If pone is missing, fine, if only one tooth in sextant then add it to the next and give an X for said sextant with no teeth
What teeth are used for a BPE on a child? Which codes are used?
16, 11, 26, 36, 31, 46
Only codes 0-2 are used for children up to 11
How to take a bpe?
Walking motion of probe with 20-25g force around pocket of each tooth buccal lay and lingually
Note worst score for sextant
What is a code 0
Black band fully visible with no BOP or PRF
What is a code 1 and its treatment
Pockets <3.5mm, BOP, no PRF
OHI and motivation, assess BOP for local or generalised
Code 2? And treatment?
Pockets <3.5mm, ? BOP, PRF
Remove PRF, assess BOP if there is, plaque index scores, give OHI
Code 3 and treatment?
Pockets >3.5mm but less than 5.5mm
?BOP ?PRF
Plaque and bleeding scores
OHI, remove PRF and assess BOP, alter modifiable risk factors, scaling and RSD, radiographs
6ppc after treatments and 3 months
Code 4 and treatment?
Pockets >5.5mm
?BOP and ?PRF
FMPC and radiographs there
OHI and -PRF, change modifiable risk factors
Plaque and bleeding scores
What probe is used for a bpe? Describe it
CPITN / WHO
band at 3.5-5.5mm and band at 8.5-11.5mm
What probe is used for a 6ppc and describe it
PCP12 probe
3-6mm and 9-12mm
