What is steatorrhea? If a patient presented with this where would you think the issue was?
Fatty oily stools caused by increased lipids
Pancreas (due to lack of enzymes being produced)
What is constipation
< 2 bowel movements per week
What goes along with constipation?
Straining

Abdo pain

What drug commonly causes constipation?
Opiods
Treatment of constipation?
Treat underlying
Diet, exercise, fluid
Laxatives
Name the 3 types of diarrohea and explain their causes
Osmotic - large quantities of non-absorbale substances in the bowel cause water to move into the lumen
Secretory - secretion of electrolytes into the lumen in response to a signal - followed by movement of water
Inflammatory - damage to mucosal cells leads to loss of blood and fluid. Decrease in absorptive function causes a build up in malabsorbed substances
What type of diarrohea is IBD associated with?
IBD
Osmotic diarrhoea can be caused by what?
How is it tretaed?
Certain laxatives
Malabsorption condition e.g. lactose intolerance
Avoid substance
Enterotoxins released by E.coli, shigella (maybe), C.diff cause secretory diarrohea, how is this treated?
Fluids
Electrolyte replacement
At what point does diarrhoea go from acute to chronic?
