Book IV 173-174 Flashcards
Extemplo Libyae magnas it Fama per urbes,
Immediately Rumor goes through the great cities of Libya
Fama, malum qua non aliud velocius ullum:
Rumor, than which no other evil is swifter
mobilitate viget virisque adquirit eundo,
she thrives on movement and acquires her strength by going
parva metu primo, mox sese attollit in auras
first she is small because of fear,
ingrediturque solo et caput inter nubila condit.
she steps on the earth and hides her head among the clouds
illam Terra parens ira inritata deorum
Parent Earth provoked by the wrath of the gods
extremam, ut perhibent, Coeo Enceladoque sororem
as they report, gave birth to the last one, a sister to Coeus and
progenuit pedibus celerem et pernicibus alis,
Enceladus, swift as to her feet and with swift wings
monstrum horrendum, ingens, cui quot sunt corpore plumae,
a dreaded monster, huge, to her as many feathers with respect to her body
tot vigiles oculi subter (mirabile dictu),
so many wakeful eyes beneath, marvelous to tell
tot linguae, totidem ora sonant, tot subrigit auris.
as many tongues, as many mouths resound, she raises many ears
