Aeneid 88-107 Translation Flashcards
Intonuere poli, et crebris micat ignibus aether,
The poles thundered, and the sky flashes with frequent fires,
Extemplo Aeneae solvuntur frigore membra:
Immediately the limbs of Aeneas are loosened by the cold;
non potuisse, tuaque animam hanc effundere dextra,
of Ilium and poured out my soul by your right hand,
Eripiunt subito nubes caelumque diemque
Suddenly clouds rip away the sky and day
Teucrorum ex oculus; ponto nox incubat atra.
from the Trojan’s eyes: dark night rests on the sea.
praesentemque viris intentant omnia mortem.
and all things threaten immediate death to the men.
Extemplo Aeneae solvuntur frigore membra
Immediately the limbs of Aeneas are loosened by the cold;
ingemit, et duplicis tendens ad sidera palmas
he groans, and stretching his two hands towards the heavens.
talia voce refert: ‘O terque quaterque beati,
he says such things with his voice: ‘O, three and four times blessed
quis ante ora patrum Troiae sub moenibus altis
those whom it befell to encounter their deaths before the faces of their fathers under the high walls of Troy!
contigit oppetere! O Danaum fortissime gentis
O Diamides, bravest of the race of the Greeks!
Tydide! Mene Iliacis occumbere campis
why could I not have fallen on the fields
non potuisse, tuaque animam hanc effundere dextra,
of Ilium and poured out my soul by your right hand,
saevus ubi Aeacidae telo iacet Hector, ubi ingens
where savage Hector lies, beneath the spear of Achilles,
Sarpedon, ubi tot Simois correpta sub undis
where huge Sarpedon lies, where Simois rolls beneath its waves
scuta virum galeasque et fortia corpora volvit?’
so many snatched shields, helmets, and brave bodies of men!
Talia iactanti stridens Aquilone procella
To him uttering such things, a roaring storm from the North wind
Franguntur remi; tum prora avertit, et undis
the oars are broken; then the prow turns, and
dat latus; insequitur cumulo praeruptus aquae mons
gives its side to the waves; a towering mountain of water pursues in a mass
Hi summo in fluctu pendent; his unda dehiscens
These men hang on the top of the waves, a gaping wave
terram inter fluctus aperit; furit aestus harenis.
opens the ground between the waves to these others; the tide rages in the sands.
