bones, cartilage, ligaments Flashcards
what are the 4 types of bones?
- long
- short
- flat
- irregular
what is the function of a long bone? give an example.
- movement
- blood production
ex. humerus
what is the function of a short bone? give an example.
strength
ex. carpals
what is the function of a flat bone?
organ protection
ex. sternum
what is the function of a irregular bone?
specific functions
ex. vertebrae
what is hyaline/articulate cartilage?
covers the end of the bones for smooth movements
what is costal cartilage?
anterior end of ribs that gives lungs the flexibility to inhale and exhale
what are invertebral disks?
- type of cartilage
- shock absorption
- filled with fluid
- allows flexibility
what happens if a disk is ruptured?
vertebrae fusion, prohibits flexibility in that region
what is meniscus?
- type of cartilage
- cushion between femur and tibia
what are colateral ligaments?
ligaments on both sides of the knee
what are cruciate ligaments?
located on the inside of the knee to prevent bone from sliding forward/backward
