Bones And Fractures Flashcards
2 main part of bone?
Outer cortex and inner medulla
What are some characteristics of the outer cortex?
Dense, strong, heavy, compact
What are some characteristics of the inner medulla?
Porous, weak, light, spongy
Where in the bone is the bone marrow found?
Inner medulla
What covers bones?
Periosteum+ lots of blood vessels and nerves
What happens when bones grow?
Hyaline cartilage in laid down first then ossifies (endochondral ossification)–> bone then grows
Name the 4 parts of a bone?
Epiphysis (ends), epiphyseal growth plate, metaphysis and diaphysis (main shaft)
Name the classes of bones (5)
Flat bones (protective e.g. sternum) Long bones (tubular e.g. humerus) Irregular bones (weird shapes e.g. scapula) Sesamoid bones (with tendons e.g. patella) Short bones (cuboidal e.g. carpals and tarsals)
What is the initial healing step for a fracture?
Callus of new bone around fracture line
Second stage of fracture healing?
Callus remodelling
What bones make up the axial skeleton?
Skull, neck and trunk bones
What bones make up the appendicular skeleton?
Pectoral girdle, upper limb, pelvic girdle and lower limb
