bone repair and calcium homeostasis Flashcards
what issues can you get with too much bone resorption?
- osteoporosis
- osteopenia (weak bones but not enough to break)
- rickets
what happens when there is too much bone formation?
osteopetrosis
what are general classifications of bone?
long and short bones
how can we macroscopically classify bones?
cortical bone- dense
calcaneous bone- spongy
how can you microscopically classify bone?
woven bone- immature and disorgaised also flexible
lamellar bone- more stress orientated, used to be woven bone but stress makes it organise and get stronger
what are the 3 types of bone cells?
osteoblasts – on surface bone, produce protein component acellular matrix – regulate bone growth and degradation
osteocytes – quiescent mature cells embedded in bone matrix. They maintain bone.
osteoclasts – responsible for bone degradation and remodelling
what happens to osteocytes as you age?
they go down
what do osteocytes orignatte from?
precursor cells in bone marrow
