Bone Physiology Flashcards
Periosteum
Outer Osteoprogenitor layer
Endosteum
Inner Osteoprogenitor layer
Two types of bone formation
- Intramembranous ossification
- Endochrondral ossification
Intramembranous ossification vs endochondral ossification
Intramembranous directly mesenchyme -> bone, endochondral has intermediate cartilage template
Intramembranous Ossification location
Clavicle, mandible, skull
Epiphyseal Growth Plate
Site of bone growth/lengthening in an adolescent bone. Missing in adults as no longer growing
Bone growing longer growth method
Endochondral ossification
Bone growing wider growth type
Appositional growth
Bone Restoration Phases
- Reactive
- Reparative
- Remodelling
Reactive Phase bone restoration
Formation of fracture hematoma (lots of blood brings in cytokines etc)
Reparative phase bone growth
- Fibrocartilagenous callus formation (collagen matrix)
- Calcification = bony callus
Endochondral ossification (as making new bone)
Remodelling Phase bone restoration
Osteoclasts destroy old bone, new bone laid down
Appositional Growth
