bone pathology Flashcards

1
Q

roe of osteoclasts

A

bone resorbing = lysosomes to digest
fusion of monocytes = multinucleated cell

Q

what is bone resorption controlled by

A

RANK:OPG ratio

6
Q

what is osteoporosis characteristiics

A

systemic skeletal disorder = decrease in total bone mass density
loss of BMD< microstructure, brittel + fragile + fracture
caused by change in formation + resorption balance

Q

non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis and osteopenia (low BMD but not low enough for osteporosis)

A
non = age, ethcnicity, fam, malabsorption, chronic, ling terms meds, fracturs, osteomalcia
modifiable = dec BMD, low body mass, sedentary lifestyle, low ca2+ + vit D

Q

describe patho of osteoporsis

A

imbalance in bone formation + resorption
diamateer increases = thinning of bone and loss of trabeculae
inc ostecolasts + dec osteoblasts
trabecular bone initially -> cortical bone = decrease density wtih normal mineral content

Q

what are osteomalacia and rickets

A

osteomalacia = abnormal mineralisation pf osseous ,atrix + bone softening
rickets = same but children = porrt mineratlisation of cartilage in epiphyseal growth plate
caused by vit D deficiency

Q

describe patho of rickets

A

ossification = oblasts deposit osseous tissue + chodrocytes degen + calcify -> bone
hypertrophy = chon mature, enlarge, calcium deposited into matrix
proliferation = chondrocytes divide by mitosis
resting cartilage = chrondrocytes differntiate
= normal but rickets gets abnormalities

Q

morphologicao cahgnes in rickets

A

defective mineralisation = dec mineraralised trabecular bone
disorganisation growth plate
dec longitudainal growth
widenig of epiphysela regions
