Body Systems Flashcards
Lowest level of the structural organization of the human body
Chemical Level
Four basic types of tissues in the body
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Fibrous
How many systems in the human body?
10
Digestive System
Absorption - Physical and chemical breakdown of food.
Elimination - Removal of solid wastes from the body
Skeletal System
Supports and protects tissues of the body.
Allows movement through interaction w/ muscles.
Produces red blood cells and stores calcium.
Muscular System
Maintains posture and allows for movement.
Produces body heat.
Types of muscles
Skeletal Muscle - Voluntary control, Striated, and makes up most of mass.
Visceral (Smooth) Muscle - Involuntary Control, Organs, and Vessels.
Cardiac Muscle - Involuntary Control, Striated, the heart.
Respiratory System
Eliminates carbon dioxide from the blood.
Supplies oxygen to the blood and cells.
Assists in regulating the acid-base balance of the blood.
Nervous System
Regulates body activities with electrical impulses that are sent to the brain.
Coordinates voluntary and involuntary body activities.
Endocrine System
Regulates bodily activities through various hormones.
Integumentary System
Receives stimuli such as temperature, pressure, and pain.
Eliminates wastes through perspiration.
Synthesizes vitamins and biochemicals.
Circulatory System
Regulates body temperature.
Distributes oxygen and nutrients to the cells.
Protects against disease.
Transports water, electrolytes, hormones, and enzymes.
Transports cell wastes and carbon dioxide from the cells.
Urinary System
Regulates fluid and electrolyte balance and volume.
Eliminates waste products.
Maintains acid-base balance of the body.
Regulates the chemical composition of the blood.
Reproductive System
Reproduces and organism.
Produces, transports, and stores germ cells.
