Sagittal Plane
Divides into left and right parts
Midsagittal (Median) Plane
Divides into equal left and right parts
Coronal Plane
Divides into anterior and posterior parts
Midcoronal Plane
Divides into equal anterior and posterior parts
Horizontal (Axial) Planes
Transverse plane that divides the body into superior and inferior parts
Oblique Plane
Plane at a right angle or slant
Planes of the Skull
Base Plane (Frankfort Horizontal Plane) - Transverse plane formed by connecting lines from the infraorbital margins to the superior margin of the EAM.
Occlusal Plane - Horizontal plane formed by biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth.
Longitudinal Sections
Sagittal, Coronal, Oblique
Images run lengthwise in the direction of the long axis of the body, or any parts, regardless of position.
Transverse or Axial Sections
Cross Sections
Images are at right angles along any point of the longitudinal axis of the body or parts.
