Anterior
Towards the front of the body.
Posterior
Towards the back of the body.
Ventral
Towards the bottom or belly of the body.
Dorsal
Towards the top or back of the body.
Superior
Above or higher than something else.
Inferior:
Below or lower than something else.
Medial
Towards the middle of the body.
Lateral
Away from the middle of the body.
Intermediate
Between two other points.
Peripheral
Towards the outer edges of something.
Central
Towards the center of something.
Proximal
Closer to the point of origin.
Distal
Further away from the point of origin.
Deep
Further down from the surface.
Superficial
Closer to the surface.
Cranial:
Towards the head or upper part of the body.
Caudal
Towards the tail or lower part of the body.
Sagittal plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into left and right halves.
Midsagittal (median) plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves.
Parasagittal plane
A vertical plane that does not divide the body into equal halves.
Frontal (coronal) plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior halves.
Transverse plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior and inferior halves.
Dorsal body cavity
A body cavity located on the back side of the body, consisting of the brain and spinal cord.
Ventral body cavity:
A body cavity located on the front side of the body, consisting of the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
Cranial cavity
The cavity located in the head, containing the brain.
Vertebral cavity:
The cavity located in the vertebral column, containing the spinal cord.
Thoracic cavity
The cavity located in the chest, containing the lungs, heart, and other organs.
Abdominal cavity
The cavity located in the abdomen, containing the stomach, intestines, and other organs.
Pelvic cavity:
The cavity located in the pelvis, containing the bladder and reproductive organs.
Abdominopelvic cavity:
The combination of the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
