Body Movements Flashcards
Flexion
- decrease in angle (bending)
- along sagittal plane
lateral flexion
- bending of neck toward left or right side
- frontal plane
extension
- increases angle
- straightens
- sagittal plane
hyperextension
- extension of joint past normal range
- sagittal plane
Abduction
- coronal plane(frontal)
- movement of bone away from midline
Adduction
- frontal plane
- movement of bone towards midline
Circumduction
- movement of body in circular manner
- combination of flexion, abduction, extension, adduction and rotation
Rotation
- turning of a bone around its own longitudinal axis
- lateral and medial rotation
lateral rotation
- turning of a bone away from midline
medial rotation
- turning of a bone towards the midline
Elevation
movement of part of the body going upwards
Depression
movement of part of the body going downwards
Protraction
- scapula and mandible (shoulder and jaw)
- moving anteriorly (forward) along plane parallel to the ground
Retraction
- scapula (shoulder) and mandible (jaw)
- movement of body protracted(going back) along the plane parallel to the ground
Supination
movement of forearm in which palm is turned anteriorly (or superiorly, upwards, towards the front)
Pronation
movement of forearm in which the palm is turned posteriorly(or inferiorly, downwards, facing down)
inversion
turning sole of the foot outwards so that the sole faces medially
Eversion
Turning sole of the foot outward so that the sole faces laterally
Dorsiflexion
Bending the foot at the ankle point in direction of the dorsum (upper surface)
- toes up
Plantar flexion
Bending the foot at the ankle joint in the direction of the plantar surface (sole)
-toes down
Opposition
Movement of thumb so that it touches the tip if any finger on the same hand
