why are bloods done?
- to get a baseline.
- confirm disease i.e cancer or kidney disease.
- monitor disease
- regulate therapies and treatment.
where can blood be taken from?
aterial, venous or capillary.
why use the correct tube?
Different colours have different additives in relevant to the test required.
what is correct order of draw?
it avoids transferring the additives from one bottle to another when filling.
common blood tests? (7)
- Full blood count (fbc)
- urea and electrolytes (U+E’S)
- Liver function test (LFT)
- Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
- C-reactive protein (CRP)
- Rheumatoid factor
- Creatinine Kinase
Whats in the full blood count?
- Haemoglobin (HB) erythrocytes
- White cell count (WCC) leucocytes.
- Platelets, thrombocytes.
- Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
What is HB proper name and whats it do?
Erythrocytes, Carries the oxygen and co2 away.
what is wcc proper name and whats it signify? when can it be high but not a worry?
leucocytes, signifies infection. People after surgery have high count due to inflammation (around 2 days).
Platelets proper name and what they do?
thrombocytes, help form blood clots.
what does ESR do?
not routine if high could be infection.
