1st step.
infection control
Infection control. Wash hands.
- wet hands and apply soap
- rub hands palm to palm
- Rub back of hand with palm of other hand with fingers interlocked do both.
- rub palm to palm with fingers interlaced
- rub with back of fingers to opposing palms.
- rub each thumb
- rub tips of fingers in each palm
- rub wrists
- rinse hands with water
- turn tap off, dry hands.

Identify patient:
Full name, dob, rmc and address.
3rd step
check
Check consultant name
4th step
check
Check if there’s any allergies if sensitive to any medication
5th step
check
Check weight and height and prevent overdosing if needed
6th step
check
Check if on special diet, ie nil by mouth cant give meds, pureed
7th step
check
Check if patient has swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and if so crush where appropriate.
8th step
check
check pharmacist has signed
9th step, Administering
5 rights, right drug, patient, route, date and time, dose
10th step
check
check drug is in date
11th step
check
Check contraindictions ie dont get codeine to already constipated pt.
