Blood Cancers Flashcards
1
Q
Blood Cancers
Blood cancer is an umbrella term for cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system.
There are three main groups of blood cancer: leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
The Leukaemias
A
Leukaemia is a cancer of the white blood cells.
Leukaemia pathophysiology:
- Normal blood cell development
- Mutated cell development
- Why can’t the haematopoietic cell make more specialised cells? (Bone marrow)
- Gene mutation causes. Why are there two or more mutations?
Leukamia Classification:
- Blood cell lineage diagram
- Acute/Chronic
Acute – immature blast cell cannot move forward
Chronic – next stage of maturation, live longer, more functional
- Myeloid/Lymphoid
- Can be categorised as just these terms (e.g. acute myeloid leukaemia) or specified into further sub-types (e.g. acute monoblastic leukaemia, acute myeloblastic leukamia)*
