Respiratory system

A

Exacerbations of chronic bronchitis:

  • Amoxicillin
  • Tetracycline
  • Clarithromycin

Uncomplicated community acquired pneumonia:

  • Amoxicillin(doxycycline or clarithromycin in penicillin allergic, add flucloxacillin if staph suspected eg in influenza)

Pneumonia possibly caused by atypical pathogens:

  • Clarithromycin

Hospital acquired pneumonia:

  • Within five days of admission co-amoxiclav or cefuroxime: piperacillin with tazobactam or a broad spectrum cephalosporin (eg ceftazidime) or a quinolone (eg ciprofloxacin)

Urinary Tract

A

Lower urinary tract infection:

  • Trimethoprin or nitrofurantoin
  • Alternative: Amoxicillin or cephlosporin

Acute pyelonephritis:

  • Broad spectrum cephalosporins or quinolones

Acute prostatitis:

  • Quinolone trimethaprim

Skin

A

Impetigo:

  • Topical fusidic acid
  • Oral flucloxacillin
  • or Erythromycin if wide spread

Cellulitis:

  • Flucloxacillin (clarithromycin or clindomycin if penicillin allergic)

Erysipelas:

  • Phenoxymethylpenicillin (erythromycin if penicillin allergic)

Animal or human bite:

  • Co-amoxyclav (doxy + metronid if penicillin allergic)

Mastitis during breast feeding:

  • Flucoxacillin
